Los Angeles

Los Angeles is all-embracing and all-encompassing when it comes to oysters. Curiosity runs high and traditions are shrugged. Anything goes—for better or worse. And don’t forget: if you didn’t take a #shellfie, it never happened.

Location, location, location! Thanks to Los Angeles’ relative proximity to the Pacific Northwest, Baja California, and New Zealand, finding amazingly fresh Pacific oysters is easy. Lucky ducks. Now, finding a seasoned shucker who knows thing or two about the plethora of choices… that’s more of a challenge. Relaaax dude—LA’s raw bar scene is all about having fun, rather than knowing it all. I found it a bit tricky to do any serious oyster bar hopping, so plan your adventure accordingly.

L&E Oyster Bar Silverlake

Step 1: head upstairs. Step 2: sit at the bar. Step 3: grill the server about their selection. Step 4: order everything, sit back, and enjoy. This petite two-story venue is full of charm and culinary wit, but I especially like it because it’s situated within walking distance from my friend’s Silverlake home. It’s like a neighborhood clubhouse that’s all about the slurp-and-be seen culture. Added perk: the most Instagrammable tile floors I’ve ever seen in my life.

Connie & Ted’s West Hollywood

East Coast transplants in LA: if you’re feeling nostalgic for that New England seafood shack experience, make a plan to visit Connie & Ted’s. The menu glitters with locally-caught and harvested Atlantic and Pacific Coast fish, shellfish, and non-seafood snacks. To be super honest, I wasn’t over the moon with C&T’s raw oyster presentation the day when I went (perhaps my friends had hyped them up too much?), but their Oyster Po’Boy and other seafood offerings made up for it.
